MAN is a company with a history of more than 250 years. It started with the construction of an iron mill in 1758 and grow into the engine business after 1897 when Rudolf Diesel built the world’s first functioning Diesel engine in the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg these merged in 1898 with the Maschinenbau Nürnberg to become M.A.N. The MAN Group is active in 120 countries and 43% of its circa 55,000 employees are deployed outside of Germany in an increasing international business environment. The distribution of employees is: MAN Nutzfahrzeuge (Utility vehicles) (36,600 employees), MAN Diesel (7,400) and MAN (4,000). The industrial service provider MAN Ferrostaal has some 4,700 employees.

The stake in this last division is sold to the company IPIC as part of a refocusing plan that started in 2005, to focus on transport engineering only.

Currently the four business units are: commercial vehicles, diesel engines, turbo machines and RENK. The commercial division is facing the biggest challenge in 2009; the other three divisions will remain quit stable in this turbulent year (according to the just published annual report 2008).
RENK is a company that is acquired in 1923 and is focused on special gear and propulsion technology.
